Sketch Crawl at Devonian Gardens

I really enjoy crafting and making things, but I’ve lately realized that I miss drawing and painting and I’ve been making an effort to rectify that lack in my life. I’ve been doing a bit of sketching on my own and, as I posted the other day, I re-organized my studio so that I could start painting again. I also joined an Art group on Meetup.com. Today, Ken and I went to a meetup with some other members in Calgary at Devonian Gardens.

The meetup was a “Sketch Crawl” and was basically an informal way for everyone to just dive in and sketch and be able to share what they were doing with the group. I brought my pencils and a travel watercolor set, and Ken took his camera and tripod. We had never been to the gardens before and were pleasantly surprised. I think it’s a place we will visit again, especially on some of those grey winter days. The greenness of it really cheered me up today.

It took me a while to get going because I am out of practice, but, even though I felt a bit self-conscious, almost everyone else said during the introductions that they just really wanted to practice or gain some experience, or that they were just learning, so I was in good company. We met some really nice people, and I will definitely be going to the sketch crawl meetup next time.

Here are a couple of the sketches I did today:

There were quite a few trees like this and they struck me as very Seussian.

I really enjoyed this one. I liked the lines and the shadows on the Anthurium flower.

Comments

  1. What a fun idea!

    • I know! This activity was the whole reason I joined the group – they are going to start doing it once a month.

  2. I love your sketches. I can’t remember the word for the way those bushes are trimmed, but I am sure it will come to me.

    • Do you mean topiaries? Anyway, they definitely look like something out of a Dr. Suess book, if you ask me. And thank you!

  3. Nice drawings. I wish I had such talent.
